This tool is brilliant. If you’ve ever been unsure on when to water your plants, this tool will remove all doubt. It is literally foolproof. The tool is inserted deep down into the pot, pulled up and you can see and feel the soil . If the still is damp, do not water, only water on a dry sample. So easy!

I didn’t realize it was plastic but that doesn’t negate it’s effectiveness! I love how multipurpose this tool is as a soil moisture meter/aerator/watering can stirrer. I’ve been telling all of my plant friends about this wonderful tool since I got it! And the fact that I can hang it up is really helpful too!

It’s fine for big plants but my plants are fairly small so it doesn’t really work for me.I gave it to my neighbor.

I don’t get it
It is super easy to use. Press it down into the soil as far as it will go, twist it and pull it out. Feel the soil sample on the bottom notch and when it is dry, the plant is ready for water. If you squeeze that soil sample and can make a mudball or any drops of moisture are there, the plant isn’t ready yet.

I purchased this sleuth to help me with my Ficus Audrey trees and it works wonderfully. It really helps take the mystery out of what’s going on deep inside the soil. Very glad I got one.
This is a wonderful tool to assist with a watering schedule.
I was expecting it in the color red as shown but got yellow. And using these in the soil and root balls of plants it’s going to look dirty after two uses! Also the edges of the soil sample areas are very sharp. We were able to file them down and are good to go now. I ordered two of these and for some reason they were sent in separate packages. I receive one on a Saturday and the second the following Tuesday. Just a little odd they weren’t sent together. These work wonderfully and in my line of work I’d be lost without them.
Thanks for letting us know! Sometimes they are red and sometimes yellow but either way, they work great. Sorry the edges were sharp. I have no idea how they got split up as they shipped at the same time but glad you received. If you tap off the soil and give them a quick wipe when you are cleaning your plants, they won’t look too dirty.

I love this product! I have a many very large plants, this soil probe has taken the guess work out of when to water. Yes, I can feel the top few inches but you will be surprised as to how moist the soil is lower in the pot. One of my favorite new plant tools!!!

My plant is dead.
I think that the initial overwatering may have done some damage but now that you have the soil sleuth, it should be helping. Please send me a photo so I can see how it is doing. The ZZ plant can go for long periods without water and since it was sitting in water for quite some time, it needs to dry out completely and might come back.

Such a great tool to use to ensure my plant gets the right amount of water
This item comes in handy for a lot of my plants, and couldn’t find it anywhere else. I have to say though that it is difficult to drive it through the lava rock material in the Kentia Palm, but I appreciate the device.
It can be difficult to use in the lava rock but if you wiggle it as you’re pressing it down, you can get it through the mix. It will get easier in time and yes, it works with all your plants!

I sent Sue an email but I’m guessing it never got through because she didn’t respond? I also left a phone message and didn’t hear back. I was terribly disappointed in the size of the two trees and I’m hoping but not sure that the branches will spread out and not stay in a ball? A year or so back I found one at a local Nursery and purchased it for $50 and it was two and a half times as big as big as the ones I received and the branches were all spread out nice. I realize the shipping cost is what killed me but again I think the picture on your site was misleading. Sue however was extremely nice and helping me order it.

The plants are grown with the ball shaped head like you see in our photos but they will spread out and continue to grow and can be trimmed/pruned however you like. I can help with this if needed. This device is small but mighty. I used to stick my hand down in the soil approx 4 in to see how the soil behaved under my fingernails to assess need to water. This device serves the same purpose. No more dirty finger nails.
It also reaches down to the bottom of the pot where the roots are. Great tool that our technicians use on their accounts!

Clever and useful. But I get soil on the floor when I pull the Soil Sleuth out of the soil. So, I need to sweep up every time I use it.
Hi Priscilla – Try aiming closer to the center area of the plant and when you remove the probe, do this over the pot so soil falls back into the planter and not on your floors. You can also use your other hand to remove soil as you pull it out and only the notches will have a small soil sample on them.

It’s a messy tool to work with. When you remove the sleuth from the soil you need covering on the floor because the soil spills on the floor. It may do the job but I don’t like the dirt spilling from the sleuth on to the floor.
Hi Maria – Thanks so much for the beautiful photos. We’ve put them on our website. When you use the soil probe, use your fingers to feel the soil as you remove it. That will give you an idea of the moisture throughout the plant and if you do this as you’re removing it, it will drop the soil in the planter instead of on the floor. When you have it removed, the samples should still be in the notches so you can then feel the moisture level on the lower notches to see if the root zone is moist or dry. I hope this helps!

A very helpful tool, for a newbie like me, keeps me from over or under watering the plant. The only thing is that I am afraid that I will damage the roots when I dig into the soil to check its moisture level.

Great little tool, it takes the guess work out of trying to figure out if the soil is ready for watering.
I didn’t really know how this works or what to expect. But the directions are simple. Haven’t tried it yet.
Rayne, After you remove the Red stick from the package insert the pointed end straight down into the soil. Spin it around once or twice and pull it out of the soil. Then there will be soil left in the notches along the stick. If the soil is dry on the top two notches then you need to add a little water to your plant. If all of the notches are dry you need to add water more often to your plant. It is a way of testing the water level in the soil.
Finally a product that help me not to over water. Don’t hesitate, just buy it.
